Moving day is coming — exciting! But between packing boxes and ordering pizza for your helpers, don’t forget about the nitty-gritty details that make a house livable: your utilities, internet, and equipment rentals. Here’s a step-by-step guide to setting up utilities in Guelph & KW (Kitchener, Waterloo).

Let's go! Setting up utilities in Guelph & KW
Set Up Electricity and Water Services
In Ontario, your provider depends on your municipality. For example:
Guelph:
Electricity/Water: Guelph Hydro/Alectra is your go-to
Elora/Fergus
Electricity/Water: Centre Wellington Hydro
Kitchener
Electricity: Enova is your partner
Water/Gas: Kitchener Utilities will get you set up
Waterloo
Electricity: Enova is your partner
Water: City of Waterloo has you covered
To do:
Contact your local provider at least 1–2 weeks before possession to set up your account.
Have your move-in date and home address ready.
2. Hook Up Natural Gas (If Applicable)
In most areas, Enbridge Gas is the go-to - unless you are moving to Kitchner (see above).
Some homes rely on propane or electric heating—we'll flag this in your home details during the buying process.
To do:
Contact Enbridge or your propane supplier to set up or transfer service.
Check for a furnace rental contract (more on that below).
3. Get Internet + TV Set Up
This one is all about speed — and scheduling. Ask around to see what providers work best in your area, it can change depending on the city and even the area within the city.
To do:
Research plans for your address (availability varies!)
Schedule installation for the day you take possession or shortly after.
Transfer or Sign Up for Hot Water Tank / Furnace / AC Rentals
Some homes include rental equipment (most commonly hot water tanks). Others have fully owned systems.
To do:
Review your purchase agreement or ask your REALTOR® if there’s any rented equipment.
Contact the rental company to transfer the contract into your name.
5. Garbage, Recycling & Green Bin Setup
This varies by region, but usually includes:
Scheduling your bin delivery (if needed)
Reviewing local pickup schedules
NOTE: in Guelph these bins are chattels with the house and should stay at the address they are registered
To do:
Check your city or town’s website for collection calendars and bin setup info.
Some areas ( like Guelph) offer apps with reminders for collection days — worth downloading!
It's boring but you need to get it done!
Getting utilities and services set up might not be the most thrilling part of moving — but it’s a game-changer for comfort and peace of mind.
